Dacorum's car parks charge 8am to 6pm seven days, and two Hemel on-street bays run to 10pm. Full tariffs, the free bays, permits and station prices.

Dacorum’s car parks charge from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday. Sunday is not free, and neither is a bank holiday. Two on-street stretches in Hemel Hempstead go further than that and charge until 10pm, seven days a week: Cotterells and St John’s Road (Dacorum Borough Council).

Outside those hours, every council space is free. That is the single most useful thing to know here, and the council’s own tariff pages state it in one line each and then move on.

Everything below comes from Dacorum’s published tariffs, its permit pages and the station car park operator, checked on 26 August 2026. The council’s off-street tariff page was last updated on 22 January 2026 and its on-street page on 14 August 2026.

Three things worth knowing before you pick one:

  • Gadebridge Lane is free with no time limit. It is the only free car park in Hemel Hempstead itself.
  • Cowper Road gives the first hour free, then charges from the second. It is short stay only, so it caps out at four hours.
  • Water Gardens South and Moor End are the expensive ones for a short visit. Two hours at Moor End costs £2.50 against £1.10 at High Street in the Old Town, and Water Gardens South cannot be used for more than two hours at all.

Annual season tickets exist at three sites only: Wood Lane End at £250, Queensway at £150 and Durrants Hill at £150.

On-street bays in Hemel Hempstead

Bays with a two-hour maximum, and no return within two hours. The hours differ street by street, which is where the money goes wrong.

Street Spaces 1 hr 2 hrs Charging hours
Cotterells (Zone K) 16 £0.80 £1.50 8am to 10pm, Monday to Sunday
St John’s Road (Zone K) 9 £0.80 £1.50 8am to 10pm, Monday to Sunday
Cemetery Hill (Zone C) 17 £0.80 £1.50 8am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday
Alexandra Road (Zone H) 11 £0.80 £1.50 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday
London Road (Zone R) 10 £0.80 £1.50 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday

Alexandra Road’s on-street bays are free on a Sunday. Cemetery Hill’s are not. London Road is free all weekend. Cotterells and St John’s Road are still charging at half past nine on a Sunday night.

Two more central stretches run on a 30-minute tariff with a one-hour maximum, 8am to 6pm every day: Marlowes between Midland Road and Queensway, 22 spaces, and Waterhouse Street, 20 spaces. Both are £0.80 for 30 minutes and £1.50 for an hour (Dacorum Borough Council).

The free 30-minute bays

These are genuinely free, with a 30-minute maximum and no return within two hours, 8am to 6pm Monday to Sunday:

  • High Street, Hemel Hempstead: 22 vehicle lengths.
  • London Road, Apsley: 16 vehicle lengths.
  • High Street, Berkhamsted, between St Johns Well Lane and Cross Oak Road: 6 vehicle lengths and 2 bays.
  • High Street, Berkhamsted, between Manor Street and Highfield Road: 7 vehicle lengths and 3 bays.
  • High Street, Kings Langley, between Vicarage Lane and Common Lane: 4 bays, and between the Rose and Crown and Langley Hill: 21 bays.

Two stretches look like the same deal and are not. High Street, Tring between Akeman Street and Langdon Street, 12 vehicle lengths, and High Street, Kings Langley between Langley Hill and Vicarage Lane, 28 bays, are free for 30 minutes and then £1.50 for the hour, with a one-hour maximum.

Berkhamsted, Tring, Kings Langley and Markyate

Berkhamsted is the most expensive part of the borough to park in.

Car park 1 hr 2 hrs 3 hrs 4 hrs 6 hrs 8 hrs 10 hrs
Canal Fields, Broadwater, HP4 2AL Free Free Free Free n/a n/a n/a
Lower Kings Road, floors 1 to 3 £2.00 £2.00 £2.90 £3.90 n/a n/a n/a
Lower Kings Road, floors 4 and 5 £2.00 £2.00 £2.90 £3.90 £5.00 £6.40 £8.20
Lower Kings Road, floors 6 and 7 (weekends only) £2.00 £2.00 £2.90 £3.90 £5.00 £6.40 £8.20
St John’s Well Lane, HP4 1HA £2.00 £2.00 £2.90 £3.90 £5.00 £6.40 £8.20
Water Lane, HP4 3AP £2.10 £2.10 n/a n/a n/a n/a n/a

Two Berkhamsted quirks. Bournside is free, but only to Blue Badge holders and motorcycles, so an ordinary car cannot use it at all. And floors 6 and 7 of Lower Kings Road open to the public at weekends only, because a local business season ticket at £375 holds them Monday to Friday.

Tring splits sharply between the car parks that give you a free first hour and the two that do not.

Car park 1 hr 2 hrs 3 hrs 4 hrs 6 hrs 8 hrs 10 hrs
The Forge, High Street, HP23 5AG Free £1.50 £1.70 £2.10 £2.70 £3.50 £4.50
Frogmore Street (East), HP23 5AZ Free £1.50 £1.70 £2.10 n/a n/a n/a
Victoria Hall, Akeman Street, HP23 4AF Free £1.50 £1.70 £2.10 n/a n/a n/a
Old School Yard, High Street, HP23 5AA Free £1.50 £1.70 £2.10 n/a n/a n/a
Church Yard, Frogmore Street, HP23 5AZ £3.10 £3.10 £3.10 £3.10 £4.00 £5.20 £6.70
Frogmore Street (West), HP23 5AU £3.10 £3.10 £3.10 £3.10 £4.00 £5.20 £6.70

Frogmore Street East and Frogmore Street West are on the same street and share a postcode district. One gives you an hour for nothing. The other charges £3.10 for that hour, the highest single-hour rate anywhere in Dacorum. The Forge is the only Tring car park with a season ticket, at £450 a year.

Kings Langley has two free car parks, The Nap (WD4 8ET) and Langley Hill (WD4 9HD), both short stay with a four-hour maximum. Markyate has one, Hicks Road (AL3 8LJ), free for any length of stay.

Permits: most rose 25 per cent in April

Controlled parking zone permit prices rose on 1 April 2026, the increase covering Zones A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, O, R, S, T and X (public notice).

Permit 2025-26 2026-27
Resident, first car (annual) £40 £50
Resident, second car (annual) £60 £75
Resident, third car (annual) £80 £87.50
Motorcycle (annual) £20 £25
Business (annual) £300 £375
Doctor or health visitor (annual) £40 £50
Visitor permit, one week £4 £5

A permit for a disabled person’s vehicle is free (resident parking permits).

Visitor parking comes in three shapes: £6.25 for 25 one-hour sessions, £4 for five five-hour sessions, and £5 for a one-week permit. Senior citizens and Dacorum Card holders pay £3, £2 and £2.50 respectively. Each property can buy four one-week permits a year, or eight if the resident is over 60, and the hourly allowance runs from 100 to 800 hours a year depending on the zone. They last a year and are not refundable (resident visitor vouchers).

Blue Badge

A valid Blue Badge parks free and with no time limit in every Dacorum off-street car park and in every on-street Pay to Park bay. There is no need to use a machine or the app: display the badge in the windscreen.

Most car parks have wider bays for disabled drivers. If they are full, a badge holder can use any Pay to Park space free and without a time limit. The four-hour maximum at The Nap, Langley Hill and Canal Fields applies to everyone else, not to badge holders. In EV-only bays parking is free with a badge, but the charge point still has to be paid for (parking for people with disabilities).

Paying

Every paid council car park uses Pay and Park, which is pay and display without the ticket on the dashboard. Coins, card, app or phone all work.

The provider is PayByPhone. The location code is on the side of the machine or on nearby signage. Call 0330 400 7275, text 65565, or use the app. There is a 5p service charge on every session, and optional text reminders cost 20p each. Prince Edward Street in Berkhamsted has no machine of its own: pay at a machine on the High Street, or use PayByPhone code 806059 (paying for parking).

Station parking: arrive after 10am and save £3 or £4

All three main station car parks are run by Saba for London Northwestern Railway, open 24 hours, cashless and read by ANPR. Payment has to be completed by 3.59am on the morning after you arrive.

Station Spaces Mon-Fri before 10am Mon-Fri after 10am Weekend and bank holiday 1 week 12 months
Hemel Hempstead, London Road, HP3 9BQ 515 £11.00 £7.00 £7.00 £33.40 £864.30
Berkhamsted, Station Approach, HP4 2AR 475 £11.00 £8.00 £8.00 £37.00 £864.30
Tring, Station Road, HP23 5QR 506 £11.00 £8.00 £8.00 £37.00 £864.30

A weekend ticket covering Friday 10am to Monday 4am is £15 at all three. Blue Badge spaces number nine at Hemel Hempstead, seven at Tring and four at Berkhamsted, and Berkhamsted has a 2 metre height restriction because it is a multi-storey, which rules out most vans and roof boxes (Saba Parking).

The annual season is the same £864.30 at all three, but the weekly is £3.60 cheaper at Hemel Hempstead. If you drive to the station after the morning peak, the £11 becomes £7 or £8, and Tring and Berkhamsted charge that same off-peak rate every Saturday, Sunday and bank holiday.
