The BID has not announced the 2026 switch-on. The 2025 event ran on Saturday 15 November, 1pm to 6pm, and ended with a fire show and fireworks.

If you are looking for the date of Hemel Hempstead’s Christmas light switch-on, the honest answer on 5 September is that it has not been announced. That is normal this early. What follows is what the organiser has published, what the last four years actually looked like, and roughly when the date should appear.

Who runs it and where the date will come from

The switch-on is run by Hemel Hempstead BID, the business improvement district funded by town centre traders, not by Dacorum Borough Council. The council lists it on its events calendar, but the entry is submitted by the BID, so the BID publishes first.

Its contact details, from the council’s listing for last year’s event, are 07708326871 and hello@hemelhempsteadbid.com.

Two places to watch:

  • The BID’s own events page, hemelhempsteadbid.com/events-index. As of today the most recent listing on it is the Shepherd Brass Band on 5 September 2026, and its Christmas Light Switch on page is still the 2023 one.
  • Dacorum’s events calendar, webapps.dacorum.gov.uk/eventscalendar. Its November and December 2026 grids currently hold nothing festive at all: November has an Amiri Harewood piano recital on the 7th, the Remembrance Sunday parade on the 8th and the DENS Sleepout on the 20th and 21st, and December has only the Bellot Ensemble on the 5th.

Which Saturday to expect

The event has moved around within November, but it has always been a Saturday, and always before the last week of the month.

  • 2022: Saturday 19 November, live music from 11am on the Rainbow Stage, switch-on and fireworks at 5.30pm.
  • 2023: Saturday 18 November, 11am to 5.30pm.
  • 2025: Saturday 15 November, 1pm to 6pm.

The two Saturdays that fit the pattern for 2026 are 14 November and 21 November. There is a reason to lean towards the 14th: Berkhamsted’s Festival of Light is already fixed for Sunday 22 November and Tring’s Christmas Festival for Saturday 28 November, and the three towns have not historically stacked on the same weekend. That is a reading of the calendar, not an announcement, and this page will be corrected the moment the BID publishes.

On timing of the announcement itself, the council’s calendar entry for the 2025 event was live well before the day, and last year’s local coverage appeared after the event rather than before it, so the practical answer is to check the BID page through October.

What the day actually is

This is not a fifteen-minute ceremony. In 2025 the switch-on was the end of a full day in the town centre, running 1pm to 6pm around the Rainbow Stage in the Marlowes pedestrianised area, HP1 1DX, and it was free.

The council’s listing for that day promised live music from local artists, schools and dance groups, funfair rides, festive market stalls, food and drink, free face painting, live entertainment and a fire show, and free Christmas storytelling in No Ordinary Bookshop inside the Marlowes Shopping Centre.

The write-up afterwards confirmed most of it and added detail: a children’s show opened the Rainbow Stage, then choirs and dance groups including Theatretrain Hemel Hempstead and Energy School of Dancing; there was a Christmas market, a funfair, face painting and balloon modelling; children at the bookshop storytime were given free books to take home; and the switch-on itself was followed by fireworks and a fire show.

Note the fireworks. If the point of your visit is the display rather than the lights, that is the moment to be there for, and it comes at the end of the day.

The trail that runs afterwards

The BID has a habit of following the switch-on with a free town-centre trail that runs to the end of the year. In 2025 it was a reindeer trail: ten reindeer, each decorated by a primary school, hidden in ten shops, with leaflets from the Riverside car park entrance and an iPad for one completed sheet drawn at random. In 2023 it was a present trail, eight giant presents through the Marlowes and up into the Old Town, each carrying a letter, with a £200 gift voucher as the prize.

Nothing has been announced for 2026, but if you are planning a December visit with children it is worth checking whether a trail is running.

Getting there and parking

The Marlowes is pedestrianised, so there is no road closure to plan around and the practical question is where to leave the car. Dacorum’s town centre car parks charge 8am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday, which means a switch-on that ends at 6pm sits inside the charged period for almost its whole length, not outside it as people often assume. Water Gardens North lower deck has a ten-hour maximum stay and is open for entry 6am to 6pm with 24/7 exit.

Full tariffs, maximum stays and the on-street zones that run to 8pm and 10pm are on our parking in Hemel Hempstead page. For anything happening on the roads that weekend, see Hemel Hempstead roadworks and travel, and for the rest of the autumn there is things to do in Hemel Hempstead.

What we will add

The date, the start and finish times, the stage line-up and whether the fireworks return. Expected from Hemel Hempstead BID during October. If you organise part of the day and want it listed, get in touch.
