What it is

Ashridge House calls it Hertfordshire’s largest Christmas light trail. For 2026 it promises a brand-new route, new light installations, a projection show on the house itself, and an expanded Christmas market in a new position at the start and end of the trail. The walk takes most people 60 to 75 minutes, and there is limited seating along the way. The trail includes bright flashing lights, crowds, music and pyrotechnics (Ashridge House).

Your ticket does not include the inside of the house.

Ashridge House sent us more detail and two photographs on 1 October. The trail is set in 190 acres of Grade II* listed gardens, runs for 1.7km, and has more than 20 light displays, Ashridge says. This year’s theme comes from “A Visit from St. Nicholas”, the poem by Clement Clarke Moore better known by its first line. In the house’s own words:

“A reimagined trail winds through the historic Grade II* listed garden, where light, sound and storytelling combine to bring festive wonder to life at every turn of the 1.7km illuminated trail.”

The projections cover the front of the house itself, and the photograph Ashridge supplied shows lines from the poem, “Not a creature was stirring” and “Not even a mouse!”, hung across the facade. Ashridge also describes the trail as wheelchair and buggy accessible and the Christmas market as improved, with “festive food and gifting options”.

Getting there and parking

The address is Ashridge House, Berkhamsted HP4 1NS. Parking on site is free, with disabled bays on a first-come basis (show your Blue Badge to the steward). For the first time slot, parking opens at 3.30pm. Arrive no more than 30 to 45 minutes before your ticket time. There is no coach parking.

By train, Berkhamsted station is the nearest; Ashridge says it is about five minutes by taxi, and there is a taxi drop-off by the entrance. Trains from Euston to Berkhamsted are London Northwestern Railway’s, and our Christmas trains page has the festive changes as they are published.

Dogs, weather and food

  • Dogs are allowed on Wednesday and Thursday evenings only, on a lead.
  • Weather: the trail runs in rain. In high winds it closes, and the decision is made by 2pm on the day, with a text and email to ticket holders offering a new date or a refund.
  • Food: a festive food village with hot and cold food, hot drinks and toasted marshmallows on the trail.

One thing to check

Ashridge’s own page gives two different sets of dates. The headline and the booking FAQ say 20 November to 2 January; a second FAQ on the same page still says 27 November to 1 January, which looks like last year’s text. Go by the dates on sale at See Tickets. Ashridge House has told us the trail is closed on Christmas Day and open on Boxing Day, and that it is updating the FAQ times.
